The Live Feed: Sci Fi exec molifies Syfy angst on Twitter

It'll always be Sci-Fi to me. When Sci-fi pulled something stupid, I remember seeing bloggers call it "Skiffy" :P
  • Stefan Bauer · 5 months ago
well the new name looks stupid - but they needed to change it because now they can market it - and all the sci fi geeks will get over it eventually (me included)

This comes under other great decisions like "New Coke". You have something that works, but you have to tweek just a tad more. WHy not just call yourself ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX and throw in shows like American Idol and So you Think You Can Dance to your programming and then you'll really see new things happening to you viewers!!!!!!

hate the name change but hey they dont care thats why they make all those crappy B movies. SlyFly channel has oficialy become useless,

I will never watch "StupidFy" again. It's sad that they had to destroy something so great with crap reality shows and wrestling.

The man was being honest when he said,"Syfy is about catching up to where our programming mix is, not about changing it".

It has not been a Science Fiction populated channel for several years. The committment is not there now and has not been there for at least four or five years.

The channel that my tv was always tuned to for most of the time the ten years has deserted me. As bad a I hate to admit it I no longer CARE what they do. I will DVR any show I might want to watch but I will never watch the channel LIVE again. The same holds true for all of the NBCU operated channels especially NBC.

"Syfy" is crap or dirt in Polish ;)

I wouldn't care what they call it if they would knock down the number of commericals they show. Sometimes it seems like they show 5 minutes of commercials then only 5 minutes of show! It's easier to just wait for it to stream online with the commercials knocked out!

I can't put myself in the shoes of those that think this is a big deal, or something to be upset about.
They barely changed their name. It wasn't for frivolous reasons either.

The SCI FI channel is dead. Long live Syfy. It’s not the only cable network to rename itself, but it definitely is one of the more controversial name changes. This is not the first network to change/rebrand their name. Interesting post at TVTango that has a historical list of networks that changed their name and logo.

Just for fun I searched my program guide on my Tivo for Science Fiction and guess what "Warehouse 13 is not called a Scifi show, it is DRAMA, Comedy and Paranormal.

The running from the core viewer of the former channel (SciFi Channel) has already began.

All the talk that nothing has changed is just that Talk and basicially a lie.

This is the last post for me about this subject I will make because I have promiced myself to just avoid their lies in the future.

I am glad I just bought a large number of BOOKS that have my genre and I look forward to the genre that will replace the failed Syfy after it has to change again to survive.

    Syfy sucks.

And loses its the cool "if" visual, transition/buffer.
    And I inquire: Y?
  • Mikey M · 5 months ago
I remember they played Braveheart once. WTF?
I remember the good ol'd days when they used to play old Sci Fi shows, now we get Ghost Chasers and Scare Tatics?

Comcast took away our Sci-Fi (or syfy) a long time ago, so the name doesn't mean much to me. I only watch whatever they offer on Hulu which so far is Eureka and BSG. The scifi website is a mess with sluggish video streaming (and yet the commericals play perfectly, go figure). NBC Uni makes more money with SciFy -- Syfee -- dammit! Anyway NBC Uni makes more money through their Sci Fi and USA networks than it makes through 4th place NBC. For some reason now that they've realized where the real money comes from suddenly they want to go mess with SciFi. Next they'llmess with USA. Possible New Names for USA: The American Network, The US Americans Network, or the Us! Network.

They began their departure from the base long ago when they canceled Farscape only to replace it with Tremors. That to me was the moment SciFi turned its back on the fans and entered the downward spiral into the utter rubbish that it is today.

When did NBC Universal originally acquire the Sci Fi channel? Anyone remember?

It was shortly after that when their programming began to veer away from real sci fi and into fantasy, drama, B movies, reality shows, etc.

The whole concept of "scifi" as a genre is fiction based on science. It used to be intelligent explorations of new frontiers of imagination and perceptual boundaries. Now it is mostly horror flicks, paranormal, mucus-dripping aliens, and good old war movies and action flicks in space. It used to have character depth and allegory, with wide ranges of ages in the roles. Now it is uni-dimensional, handsome 20 and 30 somethings. PsyPhi, SyFy, SighFigh - The genre is having the Logan's Run "renewal". Wait a minute, they did not get renewed, just zapped.

there are no “y’s” in Science Fiction so why are there now? Another trick to dumb down everyone?
  • mark allen roberts · 5 months ago
Did Craig Engler work at tropicana's ad firm before Sci-Fi?
Changing because you can, and not becuase you should is an inside out view of marketing.
  • suziehendrix · 5 months ago
So does this mean that you just hired Sarah Palin as your new spell checker and grammarian?
  • chiqui · 5 months ago
I love the name...I think it is an incredibly smart move.
  • Fred Evil · 5 months ago
Foolish move. Alienate your core audience in an attempt to get more folks to watch you, who will never, ever watch you.

If you wanted to abandon Sci-Fi (and let's be frank, YOU ALREADY HAVE), find a name that's pronounced differently! Let the Sci-Fi nerds have Sci-Fi, and you take something else. Instead you've c*#k-blocked Sci-Fi now, with a channel that really IS NOT Sci-Fi!!

    AWFUL name, AWFUL decision.

    Psst...Syfyllis Maketing guys.....YOU SCREWED UP!!

Now you can watch your channel circle the drain, just as we have for the last 9 months.

The name sucks, but at this point, it really doesn't matter. While SCI-FI wasn't emmy worthy programming to begin with, it was fun and mindless (in a good way). Unfortunately, in the past several years (and with the addition of wrestling), it has become stupid and mindnumbing (in a bad way). There are only one or two shows that I will continue to watch; and thankfully I have a DVR and can/will record and watch at a later date. No more live watching in our house.

Sometimes change is good. This time it is not! Sounds like "siffy", a new soft drink or a kids new toy!
